Sheldon Numbers - Which Issues Do They Apply To?

I'm putting the finishing touches on my US Type Set (1793-1964).
    I have completed my inventory.
I'm working on images (some I had already done).
I'm also working on ID'ing the varieties.
I've got a number of the definitive guides, just not the one for early large cents.

What varieties are identified with Sheldon Numbers?
    Flowing Hair?
    Liberty Cap?
    Draped Bust?
    Others?

When I get that info I'd like to post images and have someone ID them for me.
My 1793 Wreath has the Sheldon Number on the NGC label (S-11c).
And someone in here did my 1798 for me (S-184).

I'll post others for help when I find out which ones Sheldon Numbers apply to.

    -- Copper Cents/1816-1857 - Newcomb/Clapp Reprint
    -- US Cents/1840-1857 - Grellman
    -- Two Cents - Flynn/Paul
    -- Silver Three Cents - Flynn/Zack
    -- Nickel Three Cents - Flynn/Fletcher
    -- Half Dimes/1792-1837 - Logan/McCloskey
    -- Half Dimes - Durst
    -- Bust Dimes - Zack/Scuderi/Sherrill
    -- Early Dimes - Logan/Lovejoy/McCloskey/Subjack
    -- Early Quarters/1796-1838 - Browning
    -- Early Quarters/1796-1838 - Tompkins
    -- Early Quarters/1796-1838 - Rea/Peterson/Karoleff/Kovach
-- Early Half Dollars - Parsley

Yes, the Sheldon numbers stop at 1814. Sheldon contemptuously called the later dates, “machine made tokens,” although he did mention them from time to time.

My C.Q.R (Copper Quotes by Robinson) lists 295 Sheldon die pairings to cover all large cents types:Chains (1793), Wreaths (1793), Liberty Caps (1793-1796), Draped Busts (1796 - 1807) and Classic Heads (1808-1814) struck for the years 1793 thru 1814.

    That is, S-1 to S-295.

In addition, there are also 'NC' coins for most years. 'NC' stands for non-collectible due to their rarity.

    Some notable Sheldon numbers:

    S1- S4 : Chain Cents
    S-5-S11 : Wreath Cents
    S-12 - S16 : 1793 Liberty caps
    S-1888 - S-189 : 1799 Draped Bust Cents
    S-266 : 1804 Draped Bust Cents

Off the top of my head, the Chain Cent is an S-3, the leaning R Variety. Note the position of the “R” in “LIBERTY.” I think that is rated as an R-3 these days. It is the most common Chain Cent variety. The 1814 Classic Head is an S-294. It is a common R-1 variety.

I’ll leave the 1794 to “The Boys of ‘94.” I’m not a walking expert on those.

    Thanks for the two ID's.
I'll add them to my type set database.

Having worked with Grellman's book I know I'm going to have trouble with the Newcomb Numbers when I get to my 1839-1857 Large Cent set.
I'm better with the LM Numbers for the Capped Bust Half Dimes.
And I've got the Browning Numbers perfect for Capped Bust/Reduced Diameter Quarters (I'm only missing 2).

I've stayed away from the Seated Liberty sets and the Barber sets.
I'm too old to start tackling the big sets.

And gold doesn't grab me that much except for my type set.
I've got the NGC Registry Short Type Set complete (1834-1933, no designs prior to 1834).

The 1794 is S-26 Die stage III, R-2

The die gouge through the left side of O in OF and the die crack through the S nails it as S-26, the die clash mark from the crack up to the gouge (caused by the end of the bust) and the faint marks up to the F in OF from the pole identify it as Stage III. (in stage IV there are die chips over the I in AMERICA that I don't see on this coin.)

I have the original "Pennywise" CD. It has the first edition from 1967. Dr. Sheldon was a member at that time. I can hook you up if this may help?
