This last weekend I found this Tonk India on the cheap. I’d never seen a coin from Tonk or at least I haven’t recognized any as being from Tonk. I’ve never been to Tonk nor have I heard of it before this weekend. Tonk appears on the map just north of Bhopal and just south of Gwalior. This is basically located smack in the middle of India. How do you think a coin from 1932 Tonk ended up in a world coin collection in the Northeast USA? Do you suppose that a Dupont worker carried it home to the States back in 1932 when it was still a red coin? Perhaps there is a big coin collecting base in Tonk? This Pice coin was made as both a 26 mm diameter and a 21 mm coin in 1932. The catalog price for UNC is $3 and $2 respectively. There must be a bunch of them available if the price is only a couple dollars in UNC. My coin depicted here is the 26 mm diameter and is dated 1350 (1932). Thanks for letting me share & please post an Indian coin.
Bi-Metal Tiger Coin This is the seller's photo of a 2010 Bi-Metal coin from India. I bought this type coin from this seller.
Dan, You have an eye for picking the most beautiful coins! I love your Tonk Piece in particular! It is probably the best specimen of that coin I have seen! Though it costs only a few $, it is very hard to find at this grade. I think the low price is in large due to very less demand for Indian coins in the past and the catalogs are still catching up with it's real world prices. I would pay at least 10 times the price of you paid for it for this coins
Awesome I now see that a 1932 India-Tonk Pice in PCGS MS63RB sold on eBay for $87 plus $15 shipping! Apparently the catalog is well behind the India coin market in this case.
Here are some coins I recently picked up on ebay. The first is a very lovely lustrous 1/4 anna from Gwalior state Obverse: (Nagari legend): “Shri Jivaji Rao Sindhia Ali Jah Bahadur – Gwalior” Reverse: (Urdu) Eek Paisa; (Nagari) Pau Anna – Samat 1986. Mint: Gwalior (obv.) Date: 1986 VS (1929AD) (rev.)
Neat coin! I think that I have a quarter Rupee of the same date but your coin is much nicer (and larger).
