I recently googled the SGS and found out it wasn't a very well trusted grading company? can anyone give me some more info on this? I have a few coins graded by this company.
SGS is not a grading company. It is a self-slabber who sells on ebay using the name ABCOM (I think). Everything slabbed by SGS is graded 70. There is nothing wrong with buying SGS slabs, but don't think you're getting anything except a raw coin in a plastic holder.
If they are not NGC or PCGS and you don't know coins well IMO don't buy coins because of anything on the holder, in other words you should just consider it a raw coin. I do like Anacs, Segs and ICG most of the time but seeing the coin is needed. I've only seen that company on ebay which makes me more suspicious...
Its easy grading SGS coins, nothing is less than an MS-70. I think they only print one label. As always, buy the coin not the slab. I have actually gotten a deal on some 65ish coins that were SGS that people wouldn't touch. real bidders see SGS and go away so I like it! I get some deals!
The name is Aboncom, look them up on www.toolhaus.org (if it is working at the moment, they go down once in a while.)
I just did some quick research on the NGC Census. Of the several varities of 1992-D Lincoln they have listed the highest grade given was an MS68 on 36 occasions. Then I looked and saw that of the over 54,000 memorials they have slabbed as Red a mere 12 have been given an MS70. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if SGS was putting 100 MS70 memorial cents out on any given day. Now as someone mentioned earlier you can find a bargain once in a while because the name is so not respected but I wouldn't dream of buying a coin slabbed by them without seeing it in person. In short Your Cat I reckon your cat (if you have one) could probably do a more honest job of slabbing coins.
