Could anyone please tell me anything about SGS, including how that service ranks with grading services like NGC. PCGS, ICG, ANACS, etc.? E-bay currently has a 1955 Proof Set graded PR70 by SGS just listed. I've never even heard of a proof coin, much less a set, that old with a perfect grading! Are these guys for real?
Run away from SGS. Here's one of many previous threads on SGS: Star Grading Service SGS Coin Talk THREAD LINK Do a simple search on SGS and you will have all of your questioins answered. Bottom line is that it is an eBay powerseller that sells/grades their own coins. Throw some gold foil tape and plastic on a coin and sell it as "perfect". As for ranking the TPG's, I like PCGS, NGC, ICG and ANACS only. If you want rankings, I would go to the greysheets: GREY SHEET RANKINGS You will see that SGS is NOT on the list because they are not even a legit grading service.
http://coins.about.com/od/coinbuyingadvice/qt/ebay_coin_fraud.htm Found this article above. I'll have to photo and post a slab I just got from them. I was a dumb ass to buy from a first party grader anyways. It has a spot on the coin and was graded an MS-70. But I only paid as if the grade were and AU-50. Still, it's not even an AU-50!
The primary seller of SGS coins is the same person who owns SGS. Much the same way that AH was the primary seller of Crapugraded.
