Well my fiance and I decided on a Honeymoon spot! We were going to go to Paris, but with the Euro at almost 1.50 we decided against it, it would get really expensive. Instead we chose to stay in the states and decided on San Francisco! I thought, man that would be cool to check out the SF Mint, so I headed over to the mints website and pulled up the SF mint. The last paragraph stated that they do not accomodate visitors anymore because all the space is needed for personnel and such... Oh well, what a bummer, they should really have a visitors gallery or a tour of some sort... Just thought I'd vent , thanks for listening! Jim
Jim: I know how you feel. I took the family to SF in 2001 and the only thing that I really wanted to see, besides Alcatraz, was the mint. And it was closed.
Next time drop a visit to the Royal Australian Mint in Australia - it's really superb. http://www.gxseries.com/gallery/?dir=Canberra Mint07
Sure, but I guess Jim wanted to visit the current US Mint facility. The Old Mint will indeed be a museum: http://www.themintproject.org/index.php Jim, the decision not to visit Europe sure was right: In Paris you would have gone to the Monnaie de Paris store and to Rue Vivienne vendors ... and getting back broke is not the best thing to do on a honeymoon trip. Hope you will still have a great time! Christian
Is not being able to visit the Mint really a high priority thing to do on your honeymoon? Am I missing something here? Something seems wrong????
Its not "high priority" but something that I would be interested in doing. We plan on seeing everything, the fishermans wharf, the redwoods, Monterey.... If I was just gonna do the do the whole time, I'd do it here and save a few grand...... Jim
I agree with you there. I remember back when I got married we planned on going to see those famous heads of the Presidents, the Bad Lands, etc. but for some reason we ended up in Wisconsin and never seeing much there either. I've known many that went to places like Hawaii and never got to see the beach. HMMMMM. Am I missing something too?
The San Francisco Mint has not run tour for a long time. They did run a tour in August of 1949 for members of the ANA attending a national ANA convention. Someone on the tour noticed the mint producing silver dollars. In 1949. And there's a story behind that. Link to my website article here
