Set of Coins-Assistance

Greetings, All.

I am new here so please bear with me. Recently came across this batch of diverse coins that I could use some guidance from you. In the batch are some Mercury dimes, 1979-D SBA thin rim, gazillion Drummer Boy quarters, Buffalo nickels, Ocean View Nickels, and Brown Wheaties. In the batch, there's a single 1878 Liberty Silver dollar. There's this one mystery coin of ancient origin that is proving to be the one that needs to be unraveled. I suspect it's a Roman coin. During my search, I headed over to the ancient coin forum on another site, but was a bit hesitant to register due to the fact that they require full disclosure of your name, address, and email. For me, CT is a good balance for it only requires your created user name along with an email address.

I digress....so do you wish for me to post a photo of the coin group so you guys can take a look at them and let me know your thoughts? Suggestions are most welcome.

Welcome @CoinMagic ... Be warned... Coin collecting is highly addictive... The dollar should be a Morgan dollar. 1878 was the first year for Morgans and there are all sorts of varieties. How bout start by posting the obverse and revers of that one and lets see if we can't get you some good info.

 

If you have the coins, I suggest separating the silver dollar and the ancient coin and post them on the appropriate sub-forums here. Clear in focus images of both sides, cropped to just show the coin, and before you post choose the full image for all. If you leave them as thumbnails it makes them more difficult to see. Post away but CT has many different forums, ancients, paper money, world coins, etc so please use the correct forum so you’ll get good answers. Always post photos of both sides in full frame.

Thanks for all your warm welcome! I'm going to create separate posts so you can respond accordingly. The Drummer Boys are not in any of these photos since they're enclosed inside a box. Here we go: 1-Coin Group 2-SBA 3-Mystery Coin.

Clarification: The Liberty Coin is one cent Liberty Cap. One other thing that was not mentioned was a pair of Indian Head coins: 1903 and the other appears to show 1865.

Let me know if you wish for me to post any individual coin(s) for closer inspection.

BTW, there were are a few foreign coins also included in the batch. Juliana, Baudoin, QEII, and George VI.

Should I send the 1979-D SBA coin for grading? What about the Mercury dimes (1940 and 1943 w/o mint)? Also the Indian Heads? I have a feeling that the SBA coin may have some value...correct assumption?

 

In MY opinion, NO.
If a coin isn't going to at least grade in a high MS (mint State) not worth the extra money to slab.
The issue with grading and slabbing low value coins is the grading/slabbing COST and shipping both ways is sometimes more than the coin is worth after it's encased in the plastic holder.
It's your money to spend and I'm not the one to tell you how to spend your money ( reserved for your wife) do some research and you may find some already slabbed in a grade you like cheaper than you can have done yourself.

 

The 1979-D SBA did not have narrow rim/wide rim varieties (only the 1979-P SBAs had the two "rim" varieties).

The 2nd SBA that you posted pictures of is a nice looking coin, but IMHO is not worth grading - nothing special about it.

 

Save your money as I don’t think they are welcome of the grading and shipping costs.
