Hello All. I have the following Fr. #57 Series 1917 $2 U.S. Legal Tender Note. I am curious what opinions there are on whether this is a printing error or not. It appears to be some type of insufficient inking, but I am not sure. Any information is appreciated and any discussion is encouraged. OBVERSE: REVERSE: Thank You.
The left lower serial number is also missing which makes me suspicious about a possible chemical alteration. It’s hard to tell from the photo.
I was thinking a bleach job before I read the responses. Since it is so old, I guess it could be accidental. People aren't going to take an old note and try to alter it and make a counterfeit error. (Not if they have a conscience.) Obstructions can get on the plate and make something like this. But in this case it doesn't look legit. I believe they have "sniffers?" that can tell if a chemical was applied to your note.
Thank you for the replies everyone. I am planning on sending in several notes to PMG for grading. Typically I wouldn’t send in this note in this condition for grading. I could send it in and let them look it over to check for an error, but I might also just wait and take it along to a show and let a few dealers take a look at it. Any suggestions?
I would include it with your submission and have it authenticated as a legitimate error. If it’s a genuine error, than grade is secondary.
