My first ancient- a denarius from the Rome Mint 197 A.D. Septimius Severus on the obverse and the goddess Fortuna on the reverse. I thought the reverse subject was especially appropriate since this purchase resulted directly from an unexpected windfall.

The photo is reproduced from the listing at http://www.forumancientcoins.com/ where I purchased it.

I don't know... there's an awful lot of cool Bronzes out there, I've already been drooling.. uh, I mean looking. You might have to let a couple slip through the cracks.

I have a couple of Septimius Severus coins, along with some from members of his family.

You have a VERY nice collection and an interesting website. The old foreign coin book you've scanned in was of particular interest. The non-coin related stuff was interesting as well. I spent about 45 entertaining minutes just thumbing through all the different photos you've posted. Thanks.

    I guess I was wrong...

I thought everybody's first ancient purchase had to be a Constantine coin!

Ha, that's how it seems like it should happen...but then again, my first ancient was a lovely denarius of Hadrian (with Fortuna on the reverse, misattributed at Aequitas when I purchased it). It was my second coin that was a Constantine follis.

Anyway, nice coin! I'd rather be hooked on ancients and medieval than MS-70 modern coins. :)

Well they weren't first- but I now have some Constantine era ancients that I purchased uncleaned. They are currently soaking in distilled water. Hope to have some of them ready for attribution and posting pics soon.
