I have several coins that I would like to send out for grading. After placing the coins in the flips, how would you recommend that they be packaged for shipping? I have not done this before and would like to hear what others have done. Also, what has been your experiences with ICG? Most references here have been positive and they seem to be competive with the other top grading services. Thanks!
If you just want to get the coins in slabs to protect them, ICG is fine. That being said, ICG slabs are generally not the easiest to sell on the secondary market. Personally, I think ICG is great for older circulated pieces, but the pits for anything graded MS64 or higher. So, if you're slabbing them for sale, I would go with PCGS or NGC. Just my two cents, and best of luck!
I do not have any experience with IGC, but I have sent sevral coins to PCGS. I use the mylar flips and usually bubble wrap in layers. Make sure you tape all around the bubble wrap. Maybe others have better ideas.
I have sent a lot of coins for grading, here is what i do: Each coin goes in a mylar flip, i always use the "crown" size (2.5") flips for easier insertion. I then mark each flip with its # based on the invoice (each grading company has its own instructions on how it wants this done) I then rubber band the flips together, and put them in a padded envelope. I mark the padded envelope with my name and invoice number I then put the added envelope and invoice into a small box and add newspaper or whatever for padding the box gets sealed and brown taped on all edges (for registered mail) then i go to the post office and send it registered, never had any problems.
If you are still considering grading services, try this link. http://www.ngccoin.com/ebay_ngcvalue.cfm eBay users get 10% off usual rates and can submit directly to NGC.
If you join PCGS they have specials and some free ones if you are a member. And don't forget to photo coin you send and as already noted make sure you keep records. As to insurance, I'm not sure but I was told by a post office employee that if you insure something for more than it is actually worth you could be considered having done a criminal act against the post office. Not sure if this is true since everyone insures things for more than they are worth. Also, do NOT write valuable coins inside this package on the outside.
