I just sold one of my major collections, the 13th ranked PCGS Registry Set of Classic Washington quarters (1932-1964), the set with 1934 coins with different sized mottoes. Have any of y'all sold similar sets? How did you do with the auction? Who did you get to auction the set (it doesn't have to be a set of Washington 25c)? Were you satisfied with the result? I'll let you know how my auction came out later in the thread.
Which auction house did you use to sell your set? I'm planning on selling my Indian Head Cent (1859-1909) NGC registry set (currently ranked 14) in a year or two. I want to update a few of the lower graded mint state coins with RB or R gems in hopes of getting it inside the top 10 before selling. I've been leaning towards consigning the set with Great Collections. They have consigned many of my coins in the past and I've been very satisfied with the results.
I wanted to add that the thing I like about GC is that they don't charge a sellers commission on coins selling for $1K or more. Their catalog fee is pretty cheap as well.
Well, I just sold 30+ IHCs and a handful of my unwanted type coins out of my collections at GC. I did not get all that I had hoped out of it but some of that is no doubt due to the coins themselves. I'd say about 80% of the coins sold for less than $1k so I had to pay a 5% sellers fee on those. OTOH, GC is easy to deal with. I got my check about 20 days after the sale and their payout matched penny for penny (cent for cent?) with my calculations. BTW, did you sell your set of Washington quarters as a set or as individual coins and who with?
I used DLRC. I would say that if you've used Great Collections in the past and have been pleased with the results, you should stay with them. I had used Heritage and the nonexistent Teletrade in the past and had not been all that happy with either.
As individual coins with DLRC. Each coin was listed as being part of the Psych Professor collection. That should have been psychprofessor, but I complained too late to change anything.
One other thing I should mention is that I wanted to use this experience as a test of the DLRC venue to recommend to my heirs (spouse). I had also mentioned Great Collections and Heritage but thought DLRC would charge lower fees. We'll see how quickly they settle with me. I found it nearly impossible to get a call back from Heritage. I guess they're too busy to bother with small fry like me. One other irrelevant comment: I no longer own the little red sports car (Miata) in the picture. I sold it for $25K, which I thought was pretty good for a car I paid $30K for and kept for 3 years.
Most of my recent IHC purchases have been through DLRC auctions. Since I plan on using GC to sell my set I haven't been buying as much from them as I used to.
I had always planed to just leave my collection to my wife and son but I let the collection get out of control. It would not be fair to dump the responsibility on them to clean up my mess. I changed my plans. I'm only going to save some of the most important coins and sell the rest. I found Great Collections to be my best option for my needs. They made things easy. They took care of sending coins in off brand holders to PCGS and CAC for me. In 6 months they sold 150 coins for me. Most brought a nice price and some were a home run. Variety coins that came back in details holders did not do well. GC will only do slab shots on anything in a details holder. I hope they change that in the future. My big problem are sets of raw coins that are not worthy of the grading fees. As I pull out the key dates to have graded, I'm left with a great number of raw coins that will be tough to sell. I don't have an answer for that. I'm not up for the time it would require to sell them on Ebay.
I ran into the same dilemma with my collection. I had amassed a lot of things that weren't worth sending to be graded. So I decided to take everything, other than my registry coins, to my LCS. I felt that I made out well enough. He ended up selling much of what I sold to him through his weekly online coin auctions.
Has anybody here used both Great Collections and DLRC to auction coins from your collection? Which did you prefer?
