Because of certain necessary reasons I wish to sell my coin collection.
I was wondering what the best way to do this would be (eBay, advertise it around town, coin store, coin show or something else). Also let's say I have about 50 Mercury Dimes all with common dates and all are in the same condition pretty much (maybe VG-VF) should I sell those individually or altogether. Also would you recommend selling a collection now or should I wait a year or so (economy is going downhill it seems). I care more about selling the coins for a higher profit rather than selling them quickly. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Your best chances are with ebay. I would not advertise around town about your collection or somebody might break in and rob you while you're at work.

I'd never take anything to a dealer unless I was desperate to liquidate. No different than trying to sell anything to any dealer. "What you have is junk and they have what everybody wants, for top dollar."

With ebay, more than likely you're selling them to people that want them, more than trying to turn around and make a profit. You're more likely to get 'around' what they're worth at least, with a large audience 24/7 watching and competing with each other. While for the most part remaining anonymous.

Oh yeah, some things will definitely be easier to sell as a group such as the 50 merc dimes. Fooling around with listing and shipping anything under 50-100 bucks is hardly worth the time to me, but it's up to you. I've seen people listing hundreds of items for 0.99. Too much fooling around for me though.

Also, don't forget there's an auction forum right here on cointalk! Let us know what you have. Some people, including myself may be interested.

I'm not sure of the best way but 50 common Mercs. would probably best sold together . Hope you do well with them , 1st think of a price that would be fair to both you & whoever buys them , then I'd probably list them here on this site to see if you can get it , with e-bay you might get more but you might get less , here your not locked into anything so it can't hurt .

That's probably the best bet but there is also CoinBug and it won't eat you alive with listing fees like Ebay. :thumb:

To get the best money, you'll need good clear, large pics. That is MORE important than your choice of selling venue if you choose to sell online.

With Ebays fees, also comes 100X the viewers, remember that. If you have a hot series, or better date/grade material, that would be my choice.

Bullion and generics I would try here on the open forum or another zero cost place to sell.

A local shop as a walk in will be a disaster to your bottom line, so would selling to a dealer at a show.

    Good Luck !!

I would guess that Ebay will net the most money unless you already have an established relationship with a dealer you know and trust. Also, my guess [emphasis on guess] is that anything made of silver will be higher in price a year from now -- perhaps by a lot.
