Selling advice for heartbroken collector

I'm devastated but I have to sell some coins from my type set to pay CC bills from holiday gifts. Coins range from $200-1000 greysheet, most of the valuable ones PCGS/NGC/ANACS graded with all ANACS being old holders) all of which were selected for quality toning. None of these are marginal examples in the slightest bit, if anything they are good or better for the grade.

I live in Manhattan and was wondering if the NY Numismatics Convention would be a good place to try finding buyers (perhaps selling to dealers there i would net a higher price?)

I'm under the impression eBay is the wrong way to go between fees and fraud, and that most dealers will give me a low price as they need to maintain their storefronts (although I wonder if the convention would mitigate that), any advice as to how I should go about trying to sell?

Won't help ya sell the coins. Might help ya not need to in the future. Just a friendly suggestion.

 

Thank you for the suggestion but I would appreciate advice more on track with whether the numismatics convention is a good place for me to try and sell or not.

 

High grade stuff, I would say yes! More people come to these places to buy the rare and high end
Coins i think you would be able to get more out of them there then places like the bay!

 

Do you have to sell fast? Check with local dealers - or you might be able to work something out with a seller like 900fine.

 

Are you saying I could sell to other collectors there, or simply dealers?

 

It doesn't need to be immediate as I have about a month and a half before the CC payments will come due

You talkin' about the show at the Waldorf Astoria? If so, that's a mostly world/ancient coin event. Not much in the way of US stuff there and if anything, I think you might get low balled at that show.

 

Any other advice for Manhattan (other than dealers) then? Are there any coin clubs I might try advertising to?

 

The NYC show is only foreign.

 

Absolutely right, this is the premiere NYC World/Ancient show with all of the big dealers from Europe, South America and Asia and they have very little interest in US material. The US dealers and buyers are all at the FUN show in Florida I believe.

I would contact Stacks on 57th Street or sell to US buyers only on eBay. Most eBay fraud involves shipping to foreign countries, however if you restrict bidders to US residents it's very simple to ship and quite safe. Just take good photos and describe the coins honestly. From the time that you list an auction on eBay you will have money in your Paypal account in about eight days. Then you can transfer the funds to your checking account and pay your bills.

The combined 12% in eBay and Paypal fees stings but it is the cost of doing business these days.

Or you could list the coins for set prices on coin forums, including this one, for free. You will still need good photos...:thumb:

 

Is that the "Open" section here? I will definitely try that once I get ten posts. That said, does anyone know of coin collecting groups in Manhattan I could try contacting? With 4 million people I imagine there must be at least a few (although Google came up with none)

That sounds like a very risky proposition between the dealer and the mail, and I'd have to pay shipping both ways presumably. Do sales on these forums predominantly focus on moving stock at greysheet? (I can't yet see the open forum so I have no way of knowing yet)
