A while back there was a post on two unknown Seleucid coins here. One I had already identified, but the other was still unknown. I now have identified the second coin pictured here. Seleukos II Kallinikos Unattributed western mint. Obv: Head of Poseidon right, crowned with kelp and small trident over shoulder. Rev: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΣEΛΕΥΚΟΥ. Nike driving quadriga left. SC I 738, SNG Is. --, BMC v. 20 -- At first I thought the obverse was Apollo, but after seeing the coin I could see the trident behind Poseidon. The other coin I was able to find 5 examples of plus mine, but I was unable to find this one other than in the reference(Seleucid coins). I suppose an auction house might say this is the 'second known', but I assume there are others and I do not have access to old catalogs. One theory is that the mint that produced this is next to the ocean because Poseidon is on it. I also learned while researching this coin that Seleukos II was the first of the dynasty to use Poseidon on coinage. Post anything you feel is relevant. Also thanks to @Brian Bucklan for this one.
Is that something beind Nike or am I just seeing things. Neat that this coin may be so rare. Congrats.
