Finally bought one of these , I saw a nice one here on CT , please post your elephant tets of Seleukos.
Those are definitely very desirable! Were you worried about buying from Lanz eBay though, given all the bad reports (fakes, "enhancements") here on CoinTalk?
That's a WONDERFUL example!!.....I hope it's truly as genuine as I think it is. My only elephants include one 'tiny' example (RR) on a Macedonian shield and one I just purchased on a Roman Imperial denarius---no Seleukos types
Very nice! I only have a "starter" version of Seleukid's elephant... Seleucid Seleucus I Nikator 312-280 BCE AE 20 Athena-Elephant Spaer 129
@TIF & @Mikey Zee , I'm Always worried about buying fake ancient coins , Lanz has sold 3 fake coins on a total of 57.000 coins sold. Do you have doubts about this Seleukos elephant coin ? I also bought this denarius from Lanz.
I don't know the series well enough to say much about your coin but in general, no, I don't have suspicion about your lovely tetradrachm. My concern was based on the Lanz eBay brand. I'm sure you did due diligence prior to bidding. The most recent discussion mentioning concerns about the Lanz eBay store is in this thread: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/surely-there-can-be-no-real-excuse-for-this.281775/ Of course, fakes will occasionally slip through any dealer. How they deal with it is the question. @maridvnvm's experiences are not reassuring. (Martin is more experienced that most when it comes to fakes and he is co-moderator of the Fakes board on Forvm.) I apologize for bringing negativity to your thread and regret any distraction from your new acquisition.
I see no immediate issue with it, and found a possible reverse die link. Check it out for yourself. http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/seleucia/seleukos_I/SC_177@6b.jpg 17.05g
Nice!! => Andres2, that's a very cool OP-example ... great elephant (I hope that it successfully runs the gauntlet and is determined to be "authentic") Sadly, I don't have an example from that early dude ... ummm, but I do have a fairly nice example from Antiochos I (is that close enough?) Seleukid Kingdom, Antiochos I, AE20 280-261 BC Anchor & Elephant with counterstamp => Elephants Rock!!!
I echo TIF's statements.... I see no nothing to suggest anything but a genuine coin---and a beauty as well. I would have purchased it given the chance...it's just the 'Lanz' issues that concerned me (and TIF ). Of all of us, @maridvnvm is the unquestioned 'expert' regarding fakes....I still can be fooled about half the time.
@DavidPCC , thanks for that pic, I now see there is a bee under the monogram. @stevex6, very nice, love the ancre clearly shown on your coin, on my tet its only partially visible on the top. seems Seleukos had a birthmark in the form of an ancre , so therefor he used it as a monogram on his coins. @TIF, almost all the negs for LANZ on eBay in the last year, are about the shipping costs, he charged me 7 euro for 3 coins , thats very cheap. this the third coin bought from Lanz:
