I think I have *all of the Seleucid Kings represented in my collection. As to be expected, some of them are rather scarce and choice examples are expensive. If I can find better examples of a few of these, I'll likely be replacing them in time but for the most part, I'm satisfied with this collection. *Not quite all Here's a chart that I put together to set the stage. This shows the Seleucid royal lineage. Edits made 1:45 PM 6/25/18
Awesome collection @Deacon Ray ! (And, of course, your presentation graphics!) I don't have many, but I like their unique shapes Coca-Cola would love you! Seleukid Demetrios I Soter 162-150 BCE AE 17 serrate 16.8mm 3.9g Antioch on Orontes mint Horse Hd L - Elephant Hd R- SC 1646 SNG Spaer 1299-1304
Great looking poster, I like the colors. Hate to be 'that guy', but the poster has some errors/omissions. Your Antiochus X is actually Antiochus IX. If you are interested in all the kings, you will still need Seleucus 6, Antiochus 5, 10,11,13, & Demetrios 2. There are also several usurpers. There should be around 31 rulers needed to be complete.
That's okay, it's a start. Antiochus X is actually Antiochus IX?—that's a bummer—Antiochus Xs are very rare. 31? Really?? Just kidding! Thanks, David! I think
Sorry for the news, but you really do have a great collection. I also missed Philip I which is only found in silver. As far as I know 30 plus Tigranes II ruled starting 83BC. I still have 5 to go, all of which will be in the $700 to $2k+ range.
Very nice collection and presentation ! Some suggestions: In your line chart you need to give "Alexander Bals" an extra "A". Also why do you name Antiochus III "the Great" while for the others you use the untranslated Greek epithets ? Antiochus III Megas would sound more consistent. Here one of your missing rulers, Antiochus V:
Can anyone recommend a good history book on the Seleucids? I'd like to venture more into this territory, but I've always found it hard to get my head around the many names & faces.
That's because just about every king's wife was also his sister and everyone was named Antiochus or Laodice.
Great collection @Deacon Ray and your presentation is very nice. Of all the coins, I like your Antiochos VII Sidetes the most. The lion on the obverse has great eye appeal. @Archilochus John D. Grainger wrote a three volume history of the Seleucid Empire that is available on Amazon. I read the first two books which covered the Empire from Seleukos I through Antiochus III Megas and enjoyed them.
I've had my eye on those beautiful silver Seleucids. It's probably time to branch out from the bronze.
Yes, I know the right dealer. I was in contact with him just the other day on the same subject. I'll email his website.
Once again a beautifull poster/overview /collage thanks Ray. Perhaps start with a Seleukos I tet, Ray , preferable with the guy's name at the right side, instead of the usually Alexander.
Nice collection! Definitely move into the silver. They're pricey for my budget so I only have two. Antiochus VII Euergetes, Seleucid Kingdom, BC 138-129 AR, tetradrachm, 16.59g, 30mm; 12h; Antioch Obv.: Diademed head of Antiochus VII right Rev.: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIOXOY EVEPΓETOY; Athena Nikephoros standing left; to outer left, monogram above A; all within wreath. Seleucid Kingdom, Demetrios I Soter, 162-150 BC AR tetradrachm, 16g, 32mm; Antioch mint, 162-155 BC Obv.: Diademed head of Demetrios I right within wreath. Rev.: Tyche, holding scepter and cornucopia, seated left on throne supported by tritonesses right, monogram to outer left. In two vertical lines, BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΔHMHTPIOY (King Demetrios).
I agree with the others in starting with tets of Seleukos I Nikator. Given how plentiful his tets are that were struck in the names of both Alexander or Philip III, they can be inexpensive and hard to pass up. Babylon mints I and II are ubiquitous and can be had at a good price. The one below is from Babylon II and is in the name of Philip III, but was minted under the reign of Seleukos I as satrap. @Jwt708 that is any amazing tet of Antiochos VII Sidetes, I love it. His tets are ones I would love to get in the near future.
@Deacon Ray Nice coins! I am more fan of silver coins though I only have 2 copper coin in all my collection and actually one of those is antiochus VII copper but rest of my seleukid are all silver coins. Here is another missing seleukid in your collection. Demetrius II
