I wonder if anyone had any recommendation for historical fiction on Ancient Greece. Here are my favorites: Stephen Pressfield's books - Gates of Fire, The Last Amazon, The Virtues of War, The Afghan Campaign, and, to a lesser extent, The Tides of War David Gemmel's Troy Trilogy, but also the Lion of Macedon and the Dark Prince (2 book series) Helen of Troy by Margarate George Circe by Madeline Miller The Olympian by E.S. Kraay The Tyrant Series (only books 1 and 2) by Christian Cameron Books on order that I haven't read yet include the following: 1. Achilles his Armour, Alexander of Macedon, and The Laughter of Aphrodite by Peter Green 2. Last of the Wine by Mary Renault If anyone has any other recommendations it would be greatly appreciated!
I can strongly recommend Alexander the Great by Nikos Kazantzakis. This was one of my favorite books back when I was a teenager, and when I reread it a year ago, I was once more surprised at what a meticulously researched, relatably human yet poetic portrait of Alexander Kazantzakis has written. To keep this coin-related, here is a lifetime drachm of Alexander: Alexander the Great, Macedonia, drachm, 334–323 BC, Sardes mint. Obv: Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev: AΛEXANΔΡOY, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and sceptre, monogram left, club right. 16.5mm, 4.02g. Ref: Price 2550.
I heartily recommend Mary Renault's trilogy on Alexander (Fire From Heaven, The Persian Boy, and Funeral Games). Well-researched, and also gripping narrative- what more could you want?
I like the stories about Latro, who appears in three books by Gene Wolfe - Soldier of the Mist, Soldier of Arete, and Soldier of Sidon... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldier_of_the_Mist
Dancer from Atlantis by Poul Anderson. A time traveler's ship suffers a failure, picking up our viewpoint hero (engineer, of course), along with a Viking, a Hun, and The Pretty Girl who is a priestess from Knossos. Not bad. I agree. Good recommendations. Also The Glory and the Lightning by Taylor Caldwell. Garden City, New York: Doubleday. 1974. The romance of Aspasia and Pericles.
I like the book the last king of Lydia written by Tim leach It has a lot of numismatic references in it too
Although this isn't what you are looking for, I recommend the Age of Bronze graphic novels. It is a great, though unfinished, retelling of the Trojan War. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Bronze_(comics)
John Gardner wrote a novel called The Wreckage of Agathon, which I rather like. A sort of literary/philosophical approach, mostly takes place in Sparta, so no coins, I'm sorry to say. It is an interesting exploration of the difference between Athens and Sparta in regards to human freedom, etc. I am not sure how historically accurate it is, however.
