I´m a beginner coins collector and seek for help. Someone is offering me a coin (please see images attached) which, presumably is, according to Wildwinds, Augustus Caesar and Agrippa, RIC 155, RPC 523, Cohen 7, AMC 411 -13,3 grams, 26 mm. Is that identification correct? Unfortunately the coin is very worn and with a extensive green patina. The seller wants US$ 700 because on 2018, January 24, at Agora Auctions (see Coinarchives), a similar coin, in better condition I think, is being offered by the same value. Judging only by the images I posted, do you think that this coin could reach the same estimated value that the one being offered at Agora Auctions? Any help you could provide me will be very appreciated.
That is too much for the coin, in my opinion. Check CNG's archives to see a bunch of these. You'll have to be objective about assessing the condition of the coin you're considering compared to examples in archives. Also, those prices do not reflect the buyer's premium, which ranges from 15% to 20%, depending on the auction. Here's the link to a CNG search for "Nemausus, crocodile". That link will open to examples sold in the e-auctions (generally, their lesser quality coins). You'll need to look near the top of that page and also click the "Coin Shop" and "Print Auction" links to see other examples. It can be a difficult coin to price because of the generally "lesser" condition. You'll notice that these also come cut in half. They were frequently halved in antiquity to make change.

I paid way less than half for mine a couple years ago from a trusted Dealer at a Coin Show. RI Augustus oak crown Agrippa rostral crown L AE Dupondius 26mm 12.6g 10-14CE Nemausus chained Croc snake wreaths RIC I 158
I think it's worth more than that, assuming it is authentic. Disclaimer: I have not carefully looked at the coin. Nothing jumps out as fake, but if you don't know the seller, be cautious and look in Forum's Fakes Galleries.
Hi TIF, I was comparing with other coins like the one I posted and didn´t found anything more than US$ 60. In my humble opinion I don´t think it worth US$ 100, but as a beginner I must say I value it "by eye" only. Coin is authentic I can assure.
I consider the coin a decent example of the early type of this coin. I have several and would pay more than $60 but less than $700 for this one even as a duplicate. The question is where in that range the 'value' falls. Usually a seller who thinks their coin is worth $700 does not want to hear offers of half ($350) but I dont think this one is worth that much even so I would just walk away and write the seller off as delusional. I would pay a bit more than $100 but see no reason to waste time with a seller who would only be angry with a reasonable offer.
Thanks a lot dougsmit and others. You save me from spent a lot of money. As a beginner I´m learning each day a little more and sometimes much more than I expected.
I just bought one of these two weeks ago. So I’ve been shopping for these for a while. I agree with TIF that that is too much to spend for this particular coin, even though it’s a good specimen of the early version of this type. Plenty of these on Vcoins and MA Shops too. Even with retail prices, you’ll see several coins of comparable condition selling for significantly less than $700. But ultimately I suppose what a coin is worth is whatever someone chooses to pay for it. Personally, I would not pay that price for this coin.
I, too, think $700 is too high, but it is a nice specimen. I don't think the photo does it justice. But, yeah, look around for other examples before shelling out that kind of money.
$700 is a lot to spend on a coin you aren't familiar with. If you find coins like this interesting, spend the time learning about them before dropping that much on a coin.
