Seeing what you want to see rather than what is really there

I bought this coin because it was anice enough example from the second issue of Rome for Probus, which is a collecting theme of mine. What particularly made me buy the coin was what I supposed the exergue to be. I stared and stared and convinced myself that it was an R Digamma in exe, which would be highly unusual. I sent images of the coin off to a respected expert for their opinion and they pointed out what had been obvious and staring me in the face in the first place and that the coin has RE in exe with the usual uncial epsilon from Rome where the horizontal bar is off centre and just a bit too high to be usual.

The lesson is to see what is obvious in front of you and the simple explanation rather then looking for the unusual.

    Probus
Obv:– IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG, Radiate, bust left in imperial mantle, holding scepter surmounted by eagle
Rev:– SOLI INVICTO, Sol in quadriga riding left, holding globe and whip
Minted in Rome (RE in exe) Emission 2. A.D. 277
    Reference(s) – RIC 204 Bust type H

Still a quite a pleasing looking coin.

I've done this before with mint marks from Ephesus and dates on Alexandrian tets (hoping an LB was really LΓ). I feel your disappointment!

Regardless, you got a really nice coin out of it.

I bought this hoping it was Trier, but knowing it was probably Rome mint. Unlike yours, mines not the best example :)
