Seeing Red at the Bank Today!

  1. Well I sure had a great day at my local bank today! I went in to make a withdrawal and asked my banker if she had anything for me. She handed me a couple of coins that were on my list and asked if I knew anything about two dollar bills. I replied with sure! Whaddya got? I'm glad I asked.

Someone had just brought in a large strap of twos, most of them 76's and 95's. But four of them...

Two 28D's from the CA block and two 53A's from the AA block! (Which, by the way, are my very first red seals!)

They're in fairly rough shape, but for face, I knew I couldn't go wrong. And four in one day at one bank? I feel pretty special right now! :D

I just figured I would share my good fortune with you all. Have any of you ever found a great stash of older bills at your bank? Tell me about it if you have!

its amazing this is still happening at banks, why would people spend, or return a bill that is 80 years old? i dont get it lol

Simple: They go to a LCS asking what the bill is worth. Dealer says "Eh, I got loads of those. No one buys them. They're basically worth what it says." They figure "Oh well." and take them to the bank to deposit.

well i meant how could people do this in terms of, discarding an 80 year old piece of history, for 2 dollars.... That wont even get u a nathans hot dog these days.

  6. Those two aren't quite 80 years old. At least they weren't printed in 1928. That series was used until 1953, so there's a pretty big timespan they could come from. But it's likely because of the recession. Everyone is digging around the house for any spare bucks they can find...

If we had any LCS's, that is! :so-sad:

Coin shops often tell people that the notes are worth face just so they don't have to buy them - then some of the notes I have gotten from tellers in the know have been around to several different banks because even the bank wouldn't take them.

And yes, I have come across whole stacks of red, blue, light green seal notes - even in the past few months. My best haul was back in late January, 85 $5 notes that were saved by an older lady whose husband had kept them until he passed away in 1948! I got that out of the SDB just today to finally getting around to research all the notes, the mules, the stars etc.

  8. Upon closer examination, the 28D on the top left is also a mule. One of the most common mules, but it's my first nonetheless. :smile
