Went to a antique mall, and this booth had a bunch of seated liberty halves, one side sanded down and turned into klu klux klan badges. I thought what a shame he is ruining all these coins trying to pass them off as having more of a historical significance than they already have. If you have one of something like that, i may believe you. But when you have many of them I smell a rat

Are you sure they were damaged recently? As a clan there would likely be multiples.

so if I spent the last 20 years collecting love tokens and now was selling them all would you "smell a rat" there? You have no idea where they may have gotten them and how long they may have worked at putting the collection together. I hear the same logic with dealers that have "too many toned coins to not be AT". If someone picks a very specialized field of collecting it would only make sense that they would have a lot of that type item.

I agree with Richard's post above. I've only attended a few local coin shows in my area, but there were a few dealers displaying both KKK and WWII German collectibles. And make no mistake about it, politics aside, these items are highly collectable. The historical significance cannot be swept under the carpet. The defaced coins the OP refers to may well have been genuine to the era... but I do understand his concern, and the possiblility remains that the halves were altered in recent times to represent something they are not.
