A local coin shop has some seated liberty coins and when looking at pricing information on the NGC Price guide it appears there is a very odd gap from 1853 to 1856. At first I just assumed that seated liberty coins weren't minted that year but then I realized that the PCGS price guide has pricing for all those years. The only thing I could find in research was that the design changed with combinations of arrows and rays during the NGC price gap but why would they omit the prices? Is there something else I should know about these years when looking at seated liberty coins? What am I missing? I appreciate any information on this. Well, instead of trying to use those price guides, which are no good to begin with, learn to use the Heritage archives to research what coins are really worth. www.heritagecoins.com
The other thing you will have to know in pricing the Liberty Seated coins is their die marriage and state,as there is a following that collects them and certain die states are rare.
That's odd. I would send an e-mail to NGC asking your question. That said, G is correct, and you'd be better off looking at Heritage data and forming your own opinion.
In case you don't understand, what Chris is telling is this. There is no such thing as the NGC price guide. All NGC does is have links to the Numismedia price guide, and then NGC calls it the NGC price guide on the NGC web site.
They are not missing, they just aren't where you expect them to be. Numismedia treats those dates before and after the 1853 - 56 period to be the same type and the 53-56 as a different type. They keep the types together so if you scroll on further down you will find the 53 to 56 coins. In the case of the half dimes they come between 1859 (USA on rev) and 1860 (USA on obv), in the seated halves they come after the no motto coins and before the with motto type. You will find the do the same thing with the 1873 and 1874 with arrows coins. Those are found at the end of the series after the 1891 coins.
