About a year ago, I got into ordering boxes of halves from the banks around town. I live in a fairly large city. The first few boxes were lucky, I was pulling out a tons of clads, a handful of 64s, a few franklins, and even a liberty. After a while, my luck faded, and I hit a string of boxes (like 10) that were already picked over. I know this happens, and that there are others searching like me. So I quit doing it, figuring that this area had been picked clean. Today, I had to goto a seminar four counties overs. So I planned ahead, and called a branch up there and ordered two boxes of halves. (Today was also payday!) I got home, and busting into the first. It was a mixed box of machine rolled and hand rolled coins. Nothing came from the hand rolls (no surprise there), but the rest of the box netted me 5 clads! I looked in the second box, but they are all hand rolls, all the same type, and all have the same pen mark on them. I don't think it'll have much to offer, but I'll check through it tomorrow. While I'm very happy with my luck in the first box, I pose a question to all the box hunters out there. .... Has the well run dry all over? Have y'all been finding any luck?
haven't found much of anything lately, but I have seen more than a few people bring $100+ of kennedy 40% and 90% into some of the local shops.
I've finished going through the second box (the one that was completely hand rolled). As predicted, nothing special. I guess I didn't travel far enough away. As mentioned above, this experiment was promulgated to see where the range of the depository went. I live in Orlando, and found myself in Daytona for a day. I haven't picked up a box in Orlando for like 9 months, because nothing was being found. So I figured that all the silver in circulation had been picked out of the boxes locally. I'm aware of the regional depositories, but didn't know how big the regions are. The vault manager in the Daytona bank reported that in her 3 years working there, I was the first person to get order boxes of halves. Maybe that was a fluke with that branch? Who knows? That is why I was putting this out there to the community. To see how other folk have been faring? Anyway, since I also forgot to get real cash at the bank on Friday, it looks like I'll be spending a whole bunch of halves for the next week! Nothing beats the look from a gas station clerk, when you fill up and buy a carton of smokes, and then hand him $60 in halves!!!
