Could someone please explain the situation with the "positions" on the dollar coinage. I know WHAT it is, I just don't understand the story behind them. They are not in the Redbook nor Numismedia, why? Are they both just meaningless? Are they errors? Does one need both for a 'set'? Please someone help me on this...
You could collect both if you want. Regular coins minted for circulation will be minted with plain edges and then sent through a special machine that will roll and press the edge lettering on each coin. http://presidential-coins.com/edge_lettering_president_coin.htm The mint paid no attention to the coins orientation as it entered the edge lettering machine, so there are 2 possible outcomes. So then PCGS has a great idea to expand their market some Effective April 24, 2007 Effective immediately, PCGS will begin recognizing the up or down orientation of the edge lettering on Presidential Dollars, as follows: POSITION A - Edge lettering reads upside-down when the President's portrait faces up POSITION B - Edge lettering reads normally when the President's portrait faces up http://www.pcgs.com/articles/article_view.chtml?artid=4946&universeid=313
so. statistically there really can't be more of one than another... I see... Pretty smart of PCGS to "label" it
