Search results from 5,000 cents I searched 100 rolls of pennies from my local bank the other day and here is what I came up with. This is pretty typical of what I find at my local banks. I wonder if this is "normal" for most folks. I'd love to compare with other "cherry pickers". 1-1936 plain 1-1938 plain 1-1941 plain 1-1942 plain 1-1944 D 4-1944 plain 1-1945 S 2-1946 D 2-1950 D 1-1951 1-1952 D 1-1953 D 1-1953 plain 1-1955 D 1-1956 D 1-1957 D 2-1958 D -------------- 1-1950 canadian -------------- S mint marks (I always save these) 3-1969 6-1970 1-1971 1-1972 2-1973 2-1974 -------------- 1-1988 with probable die crack on reverse. (See Photo) and ... 1- I don't know but the date is all but completely gone and the rest of the coin doesn't show much wear. (See Photo) Anyway, that's my results from 5,000 pennies.
O.K., O.K. So I suffer from dellusions of grandure, an inflated sense of self, and poor math skills ta boot. And now that I've gone and did an edit, I don't know what you are talking about.
Not a bad haul, I should try this with my kids sometime, they can keep all non silver and gold finds. We would probably find a few wheats, an occasional GVI Canadian Cent, and lots of QEII cents.
nice finds! i may just have to try that too...my wife would probably think i was crazy for btinging so many pennies home

That looks to me like a filled die. Any time you work near machinery (i.e. coin presses) all sorts of things can get into them. Grease, cloth, hair, fingers (OUCH!), etc. It looks like you had some grease (or something of similar consistency) get into the date on the die. I have a few of them. Not terribly valuable, but certainly worth keeping.
KLJ you could be correct about the filled die. I really couldn't call this one. It was raised a bit above the background and continued through the letters at the bottom all the way to the edge. It was definitedly minted that way and I think it only became really visible after some oxidation of the copper. I'm tempted to clean it a bit to see more detail but I hate to lose the toning.
O.K. this is a first for me anyway. I was just going through another bag of 5000 pennies when I cam across this little beauty. This has never happened to me before but here it is.
The fact that it is raised is an issue. A filled die would not be raised. It would be incused, or even with the field, but not raised. Anyone have any ideas on this? As for cleaning, that is a no no - hopefully that is not news to you.
Moen thanks for posting this. I wonder about the yield for searching rolls, and yours was 1 wheatie for every 200 coins or so... Anyone know what the yields are like for half dollar rolls? I've heard some claim a 40% silver half in every 5-8 rolls... What about yields in silver coinage bags?
SFDukie, I have been searching halves for a couple of weeks now. Not much luck. last week didn't get a single one for 50 rolls. This week I pulled 3-64's and 1-67 in 50 rolls. I know that jimmie-bones has been doing this longer and I am sure that he would be more than happy to chime in on his favorite topic, halves JD
I've searched ~$10,000 in halves in the last 6 months and for most boxes I average between .75% and 1.5%, so in a 1000 coin box I usually find between 7 and 15 silver coins. $10k is 20 boxes and in those I've had 2 boxes with NO silver and I've also had 3 boxes with more than 25 silver coins! So it depends, but what I shoot for is 1%, so that averages to 1 silver coin per 5 rolls, and I hit that goal as often as not.

On average, I pull 20+ coins per week (so the ratio you were told makes sense.) The bulk of my finds are 1964-1969 40% and 90% silver Kennedys. Very occassionally I get a 1970 40% silver. I also pull proofs, Franklins, WLs, any GEM BU that catches my eye, the 1987 p and d strikes, all 2002-2005 strikes, and other odd finds (forign coins, medals, plated coins, error coins). Virtullly every week I get at least 1 Franklin or WL. Sometimes more. Sometimes none. In about a year, I get approx $600 face value in silver. Annually my finds look something like this. Silver: 1964 - $60 face 1965 - $20 face 1966 - $40 face 1967 - $160 face 1968 - $180 face 1969 - $40 face 1970 - $1.00 face Franklins - $30 face WLs - $20 face Other: 20-30 proof Kennedys 4 -1987 p or d Kennedys 20-30 - BU Kennedys 30-40 - 2002-2005 Kennedys 5-10 - plated coins / medals / foreigns
