I fell in love with this type a few years ago when I first came across one. Been on the look out for one and have been outbid several times for nice ones. One of my favorite dealers found one for me last week really reasonable ($400) that is in fantastic condition. Hope you like it:

    Himera.png

Himera, Sicily, AE Hemilitron (corrected - thanks Steve!)
Obverse: Pan as a youth, holding thyrsos over his shoulder and about to blow on a conch shell, seated on goat walking right, six dots below
Reverse: IMERA, Nike advancing left holding aplustre. BMC 52; Arslan377, 23mm, 9.11 grams

Pan is calling to us, are you listening?

Post your Himeras and goat riders!

Amazing coin. Pan is extraordinary. Do you know the meaning of the pellets on the reverse?

I know it looks like a six pack of beer but it is actually a mark of value, the six pellets indicate the value of the coin. On some coins of Himera you see six, five or three pellets. Not sure if I have seen coins of Himera with four, two or one.

Steve, I think you are right. Looking in my Sear at 1108 it is listed as a hemilitron.

I'm proud of you , Steve. Six pellets out of twelve does not make 1/4.

As is often the case, my version is the budget variety. It's actually a tetras, but of the same types, which I really like. It was $6 and I got what I paid for.

I really like your coin, I think it's incredible, never mind that it takes away from my needing to use my imagination to wonder what mine ought to look like :D.

Your coin has all the important elements! Pan is actually quite clear. Does it have 4 pellets on it anywhere?

Three below the rider, I think.

Hoover, Handbook of Greek Coinage, Volume 2 lists it as number 474 under "Hemilitra or hexonkia (18-21 mm, 5.78-6.22 g)".
