I have an epson perfection v100 photo scanner. At times, i have trouble scannign some notes. This includes most newer notes from England, the Euro zone and even the 2004 US $10 note. Most other notes are fine, only newer issues do i have troubles. When i go to scan the note, my scanner gets about 1/2 way done, and pops up a box telling me it is illegal to do so and to abort. then directs me to the rulesofuse website. My next scanner, i want to get one i know wont give me such nonsense problems. It was suggested to use old technology to beat the new security, but i dont want to use a used scaner, it wont last very long. I would rather start with something new that works, and use it as long as possible. So i called Epson today I talked with a few folks from the tech support department. 1 guy told me that the scanner DOES NOT have any software built in that would prevent it from scanning notes. I asked him why it pops up with a 'scanner' dialog box telling me i cannot scan the note.. enters tech guy #2. He tells me the scanner does not have any built in security because how would the scanner know what it was scanning (is this guy for real, right?). He says the scanner cannot tell the difference between a piece of paper and a piece of money. I told him i can scan most world notes just fine, i only have problems with newer issues from England, most Euros, and the US 2004 $10 note. I told him the 'issue' was selective, and only with those notes no matter how many times i try, but will scan alot of other notes just fine. Enters tech guy #3. The guy tells me the issue is most likely a defective driver issue. and that none of their scanners have any software to detect money that would prevent it from scanning money. I repeated that i can scan some notes, and only have issues with some newer notes. He didnt understand. I told him i am not getting an error from a printer malfuntion, that i was getting a direct response from the printer warnign me that i cannot continue with the current activity. I reassured him it was not a driver issue. I told him i wanted to buy a scanner that would do what i needed it to at this point, i know i am probably being tracked by the FBI as a possible counterfeiter.. good thing i called from work And i work for the Govt soon after this .. tech guy #4 comes on... this guy had no answers as to why his scanner DOES have anti counterfeiting tech on it, and told me to buy the scanner i wanted, and if it didnt work, to return it for a credit. I asked - so if i buy this $700 scanner, and it doesnt work, i get my money back. He said no, i would get credit to use in the Epson store. I asked him why i would want a credit in their store, if none of their products worked the way i needed it to. I told him i would have to lok at other manufacturers to determine if they have a scanner that would work for me as it sounded like Epson didnt know what their product did. He gave me assurance i could go to any store, he suggested Best Buy. I told him i 'could' go to Best Buy as they sure did have alot of scanners out to look at. I asked him how i would test the scanners at best buy when none of them are hooked up to a computer. His response - "oh!" besides.. can you really see a guy walking into best buy with a wad of foreing notes and ask the nearest store clerk - "yo! where are all your scanners that can scan this money for me??" granted i work with all the local sherrifs, and none of the local police would arrest me (for this) .. but still - do i want that hassel? In the end, after nearly 30-45 minutes on the phone with epson, the only thing i left with was the understanding they havent any ideas what their product could do. And that my best resort was to actually try the local best buy So if you see me.. daggarjon.. on the local 20/20 trying over and over to convince everyone i am not a korean counterfeiter and that i really am only trying to scan money for legal and authorized use... please call in to tell them i am right.. please Oh, and if you do know of a new scanner i can buy that will not cause me issue... you could also tell us that... before i get arrested lol thank you.. i do feel a little better now.
http://www.geek.com/articles/news/l...-contains-anti-counterfeit-measures-20040112/ Have this software Daggarjon??? This could be the reason...LOL Techies need to know a little more huh?? RickieB
One comment: What program were you trying to scan the notes into? If you were scanning into, e.g., Photoshop, then the warning dialogs were very likely being popped up by Photoshop rather than by the scanner itself. (Which would explain why the Epson folks had no idea what was going on....) But until you get that resolved, yes, I'd suggest not buying from anybody you won't be able to get a refund from. And I don't think they'd look at you too funny if you asked to test this in a store--at least, not if you were testing it on some goofy-looking note from some minor country somewhere, rather than the latest U.S. $10....
I've pondered this predicament a bit recently as well. The new version of Photoshop, CS4, will not allow you to edit some banknotes. I'm not sure if it's detecting the EURion mark or something else (Wikipedia states that EURion is for scanners and printers, and that there is another solution for graphic editors), but the fact is it catches and will not let you edit. Fortunately, my wife installed CS4 while I stayed on CS2 since I knew this was coming. But as things move forward, my scanner too will break, I will need to buy a new printer, I will need to upgrade Photoshop... not sure what the solution is. Have you tried placing little dots of whiteout over all the EURion marks? Dave
i use Photoshop CS4 to scan with my canon scanner. the warning does pop up that i cant edit or print but as soon as i close the scanner interface there is my note all scanned it. i can them if wanting to edit(ie resize, change contrast and such) and also print. so i dont know why your epson wont let the scanner scan the notes. there are many third party picture editing softwares out there. maybe give another a try:thumb:
i do have Photoshop CS3, but i am not scanning INTO PS. I am just trying to scan to a jpeg file. I know there are tricks around getting a note into PS. And i know PS only tells you that printing the money cant be done - which i agree is a good thing. But even that can be gotten around. I just want to scan, and post to my site. Folks have talked about using gimp to scan, but my twain driver uses the epson driver, which wont let me scan, regardless of whether the twain driver is used in PS or Gimp. should PS be uninstalled? I love the APP and use it all the time. I also dont think it would do much to solve the scanning issue. The warning box i get tells me 'this application does not support the unauthorized processing of banknote images.' and then tells me to go to the rulesforuse website. I dont think this is from PS.
Which is why I have an old scanner, and a backup old scanner. And I use Image Composer, a very old programme. I can scan everything, save some Dutch notes from the 1930's that have moire patterns in them.
DJ as you know I have a Epson and it works fine including on the New £20 :smile and the Scottish ones as well, I scan into Epson smart panel then transfer it to the puter have you tried that?
De Orc, Lettow ... do either of you have Photoshop installed?? For example- i have a 2006 Canada note, with a foil strip to the left of the obverse. I cant scan it After reading all the posts her.e.. maybe somehow it is Photoshop that detects currency being scanned, and prevents it.. talking about B.S in my opinion.. maybe a call to my adobe field office might be in order.. but then - what could - or would - they do about it. Im afraid if i uninstal PS, that what ever registry entities it installed to do what it might be doing to prevent currency scanning, would still bel eft over after uninstalling... a point to ponder. If i do buy a new scanner, and it scans fine in the store.. a bigger test will be to take it home and then try to scan on my pc lol
I do not have Photoshop. I use the software that came with the printer and Microsoft Picturre Editor that came with the computer.
Here is a 71 year old note that is a royal pain in the bum to scan: The tightly woven and intricate line patterns on the reverse create a moire effect that distorts the image. Bet nobody in 1930's DNB thought about someone going crazy trying to image the note all those years later.
No I dont use it either but as I say and as Lettow says try using the printer own package, then once you have it on the puter you can try it with other apps You can download Epson's smart panel from there site
no fair De orc... i dont have the $10 to test from what it sounds like.. it is in fact PS that is causeing my scanner to poop out. I might try uninstalling it tonight and see what that gets me. iwont be able to survive without PS, but if i can indded nail down the issue being with PS... i at least then have an avenue to go.... Because PS is installed right now, it wont matter if i try the scanner software. I dont scan 'into' PS now, and it sounds like it is still the one giving me the headache. I just cant stand the photosmart deluxe 'junk' that comes with most devices. i would just as soon use microsoft photo editor -- and i think we all know how great that is!!! But if i uninstall PS...and the scaner works just fine... i might have to put a call into Adobe...w e do have a contract with them for 10 seats ...
Daggarjon... I have CS and CS3....there is another program that comes with PS..I cant recall the name but it is a pic editor. When my scanner presents that message I simply set my default to the other editor and it scans...I save it as a PDF file and then re-open with PS and save as a jpeg! Works great for me... RickieB
maybe you can disable the service that photoshop uses in control panel/ administrative tools/ service instead of uninstalling, since install and unistall take a lot of time, and just enable the service after you are done scanning.
Slabbed coins are a PITA to scan on just about any scanner, you are almost better off trying to get a decent digital image of them with your camera. Particularly bad are mirror finish coins, like proofs etc. Silver is the worst, then red bronze or copper, then gold. The best scans are usually darker bronze, then gold and toned silver. This piece is in a slab, but a dark originally toned coin with even toning: I have a proof 1860 SL dollar that I cannot image any which way with the scanner, or even my digital camera. I have given up on it. It is blast white, with a mirror finish, in an NGC slab.
The issue is not PS. I did uninstall it only because i am so frustrated at the whole thing. Once uninstalled, and rebooted, i tried a scan .. same thing. I get the warning box telling me the scanner cant *blah* *blah* blippity *blah*. Then i tried something i didnt do before - brain fart.. or aneurysm most likely.... i went into my running processes while the warning box was up .. i checked to see what system resource was behind the GUI ... it is escndv.exe - which so happens to be the running process for the espson scanner. Nothing to do with PS. I tried scannign to PDF, no luck there either. I will have to reinstall PS, and yes ML94539, it does take forever. But i had to give it a try. What administrative service are you reffering to? the only one i ever found there was the for Windows Image Acquisition. Stopping or starting that has no effect on the scanning abilities. Is there another service i shoudl look for that is not so easily named? Tommorow, i am bringing my Canadian, Euro and a note i know will scan.. and try to scan them all at the local best buy. The scanner that works, might get purchased. Whats a wee bit funny during this whole deplorable process, is that the guy trying to do whats legal is being beaten into the ground.. where the true counterfeiters dont use cheap scanners.. THEY USE PRINTING PLATES. So preventing users like us from scanning does nothing but upset those who use the products... sigh! How long before all countries have whatever is pereventing the scanner from scanning. How long before all scanners prevent it... how long before all the older scanners alot of folks are using wear out and die?? Whats doing it all.. and no - its not the Eurion symbol. At least not on its own. Some notes with Eurion, scan just fine.. but then others dont. There is more to this mystery. I will report back here... tommorrow.. from home OR jail ... what my scanning attempts at the local best buy result in. for now.. the deep set frustration continues.
Very true, true counterfeiters do use printing plates, but there are not a lot of "true" counterfeiters anymore, now often times it is some pimply teenager playing around and scanning their wallet finds and trying to pass them off. Making plates and doing a professional looking job is more a thing of the past now. Unless you are the North Korean government or Iran and Syria, doing it the old fashioned way is too much expense and trouble.
