I have tried scanning a coin on my flatbed scanner but it is cutting of a part of the coin. Is it required that the coin needs to be in a mount first ? Or do I need to take a picture of the coin and then scan? I have not problems scanning photos but just think the coin can be done.
Just place the coin in the center of the scanner bed and scan away. It should work fine - always did for me.
I will try that, I have been putting it in the upper left hand corner and pulling it away 1/8" or more to give it a slight boarder and every time it has been cutting off a smidge. Also thanks for making the time to answer the post. I'm a newbie and the subject was at least important to me.
Once you do have your coin pic - then just use your scanner software or other pic software to crop the pic and perhaps enlarge it for viewing as well.
Peripherals like scanners and printers are always the biggest pain. Scanners in particular I find cumbersome and time consuming. I still use a camera...must be 6 years old by now. It's a Sony Mavica that records the image onto a floppy, which I then put into the PC and pull up the pictures. Quick and easy. Nick
How about scanning coins inside of a slab? My Canon scanner is incapable of properly focusing on the coin inside the slab. Which scanners (any of the inexpensive) are capable of doing this?
None of my scanned images ever seem "crisp" enough... in or out of a slab. Here's a Binion dollar that I scanned in the slab. It looks okay... well, the scan looks okay. What is on the coin? I have a Microtek ScanMaker 4900. The coin is at 300 DPI.
I saw the printed label said "MS50". What is that supposed to mean? I assume it doesn't mean mint state. Maybe it's for molasses spill or monkey spit. Can I do anything with this seeing it's in an NCS slab?
I'm no expert but I wouldn't worry about a NCS graded slab and go ahead & crack it open and try to gently wipe/clean the coin. There has been several threads on the cleaning subject to consult.
That's good to hear. I was wondering what an acetone bath might do for that coin. What about the Binion "pedigree"? If I remove it from the slab, the Binion connection goes, right? Does it really carry that much value?
that is great to really good to hear silvereagle! Aside from all the humor (or lack of) that I've been throwing down ( i.e. grecian formula and child protective slabs) try following silvereagle's advice. Seriously. Then after the blemish is removed, rescan the coin. After rescanning submit to this thread. That way it will tie it all in to the original subject of the post.
Like I said I'm no expert. I had to look up who Binion was on the net. Now that I know who he was I'll leave it to the real experts to tell you wether this pedigree is worth anything other than a higher price. Just don't crack that slab until you hear from one of them!!!!
The Binion name does bring a premium for many collectors. Do not remove this coin unless you plan on keeping it in your collection. The strange grades from NCS are based on the current standards, but take into consideration that damaged or environmental damage still need graded. Kind of like Anacs does, but not the same formula. The "net grade" is 50, yet this coin is UNC. It would not receive the grade without the pedigree. If you crack it out and submit it to NGC it would be body-bagged. NCS is a division of NGC, and works on conserving the collectors coins, and preserving the top collections and big money items.
I would not remove the coin from that slab. And even if you did decide to remove - DO NOT attempt to clean it - in acetone or otherwise. When I made my comment about the peach juice I was quite serious. You see Binion had a huge hoarde of silver dollars stored in bags in his basement. But he also kept home canned peaches in his basement. And more than a few jars of those peaches were known to leak or even exlpode on occasion spilling the juice all over the bags of silver dollars. So having peach juice on a Morgan is almost a pedigree in itself
Thanks for clearing that up ND. I really had no idea what the MS50 meant. I'm keeping everything, but will probably skip the cleaning. Aside from the lack of experience, I want to see if that substance grows (like a science experiment in a petri dish). I don't want to get off the "scanning" topic in this thread, but I have another Binion dollar labeled MS00. What does that mean? UNC but darn ugly?
