Here's an interesting grease filled (I suppose) coin, has issues both on obverse "U D" and reverse "P RIBUS"
That's a good one, especially the obverse. Normally you can see at least a faint or partial impression of the missing letters.
Yes, the photos are pretty much correct. You can't see the letters from above, but if you hold the coin slanted and look from an oblique angle, you can see where the E should be as well (can see portion of it's "outline") as a partial line in N (first stroke and bottom portion of 2nd and 3rd stroke) and if you use your imagination, you can see the bottom portion of the I and T. But that's with a 7x loupe and angled under strong light.
Did you search your Philly SC quarters for the "Extra Twig"? It extends from the wren's right foot toward the east. It isn't worth much. but it's a nice minor addition to any error collection. Chris
No, didn't know about that one. I'll have to look for it in the one's I've saved and for future. I have a couple "oddities" in my coins, and I am in process of culling the ones I don't want (because I don't intend to hoard any coins, I'd rather put my extra money into other coins), and only keeping X number of the best or the most special errors. It takes time, because I am always on the lookout for improving what I have, so in searching, I usually set aside quite a bit for a 2nd look with the ones I already have. If one of the newer saved ones can replace the older, that's great. That's how I have about 5-10 really nice D mintmarked quarters over the past 10 years. I'd save what seemed to be nice ones and every so often, I'd go through and cull all but up to 10 of the best. I have a few that I think could grade 67 or 68 even, as I'm learning the MS grading.
Unless they came from Mint Sets, Rolls or Bags, it is highly unlikely that you would find a 67 or 68 out of circulation. (You didn't mention how you came to find them.) I'll get a close-up of the extra twig and post it here after I've eaten. I'm starved! Chris
Back a few years ago I got some quarter rolls that were entirely new circulating state quarters, of those I kept a couple that were really high quality (I think first time in circulation, based on what I saw in the rolls). Now that I know some more about the grading (not an expert by all means) I will be able to look at them again and decide for sure, and I will send those to NGC and see, but I have a couple Nebraska, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, and a couple more that are really wonderful. I might be exaggerating on the 68, but hope to have a couple grade that high. I would love to see the twig, and I have a few coins that when I get to them I will post pictures.
Kasia, If your States Quarters won't grade at least MS68, then it isn't worth the cost of submitting them. Here is the link for the SC "Extra Twig". http://www.cointalk.com/t192272/#post1268841 Chris
