I came across these 1979-P SBA $1s. How do I determine whether they are of the "wide rim" variety? The scanned image is in an attachment. I'm new to collecting, new to the board. Thanks!
By the way those are 1979's not 1999's Here is a guide to help you, from ebay of all places. http://reviews.ebay.com/1979-Wide-R...0001668829?ssPageName=BUYGD:CAT:-1:LISTINGS:5 and here: http://home.earthlink.net/~smalldollars/dollar/page14.html
looking at the image, it appears that these are all the original "narrow rim" variety. The image is not clear enough for a definitive answer, but from what I see, I would classify all of them as "narrow rim".
For what it is worth, in my opinion you shoudl ignore the rim and look at the space betweem the date nd the rim. That is the key. I have seen "wide rims" with wide and thin rims. Compare the date to a post-1979 coin (all "narrow" and you will see the difference.
Thanks for all the suggestions. After comparing the coins to the eBay guide, they are definitely of the narrow rim variety.
