The question remains, will there be any premium of single mint set coins compared to the regular business strikes? David
GDJMSP, I have noticed that the satin finish coins seem slightly darker and lack the luster that a coin fresh from a roll has. The satin coin fields are impressive, but I feel the business strike coins are more flashy. Just my opinion. David
The different luster is to be expected. Because of the satin finish the luster is more subdued. Some folks will like this - others will not. It just depends on your taste preference.
I don't think the difference is great enough to warrant a premium. The average collector will not notice the difference if the coins are removed from the package. Those who really compare and study will definitely see the difference. As GDJMSP stated, time will tell.
Should definately be interesting to see how this plays out. But I gotta say I prefer the regular business strikes just for the fact they're more flashy. The satin finish sorta looks kinda milky smooth if that makes any sense and is just kinda dull looking. I wonder if this is just some experiment that went wrong and if the mint will continue with this new process. David
From the US Mint's web site - And the satin finish is not new either. It's been used from time to time for almost 100 yrs. There are $20 St. Gaudens, Peace dollars, Buffalo nickels - and other coins that have had the satin finish. But this is the first time it has been used on Mint sets.
How do you all feel about the new finish? Which do you prefer? The satin finish or the regular business strikes? David
I heard some idiot on SAH, saying that the new sets r handled differently and that there should be a minimum of MS-67 in those satin sets. He also said " U'll never see a bag mark".... Has anyone else heard of this? Thanks My Kennedy half, I believe D set, has two reed marks.
Dunno - haven't seen either personally. I've seen the satin finish on the older coins - always kinda liked that because it was different. But in a way I'm a lot like you - I love to see a coin with lots of luster
I have. I'll agree it is clever marketing, but I don't see where it will change much for them in the number of sets that are submitted - which would translate into more money if it did. For those that haven't read about it - in a nutshell - NGC has decided to slab the coins as SMS ( Special Mint Set ) - much like the '65, '66 & '67 SMS coins. Of course it will likely be a short lived designation - for they won't really be special at all if the mint continues issuing the satin finish mint sets in years to come as they say they will. Well guys/gals I must back track a bit after giving my mint set a real good eye balling! The Mint has created a whole new set of coins here and with this being the FIRST year for a full set of satins, well I would suggest you brace yourself on where the are going or should I say, gone already. Rolls of these satin buffalo's are already in the $50 to $60 range and this is just the first week. I wouldn't mind buying a roll as there is no way I intend to purchase 40 mint sets. Actually I am already curious as to which coins in the set will escalate in value the quickest as you must give the Mint credit this is a first! I am definitely on a buffalo hunt again so all you guys cut those mint sets open and send the buffalos to me!!! I think we are looking at the lowest mintage coins this year and they are all satin!
I think black lace would have been a great effect but almost sure they would increase the price of the set to cover the lace!
