Does anyone have any thoughts on starting a gold type set from San Francisco? I have been taking a look at price trends lately, and it seems that S mintmark gold is priced more reasonably than the other mints. I assume it is because there are not as many collectors of S mint gold. In a way that is a good thing in that there is less competition (relatively speaking) to acquire coins; however, it may be an indication that there is not as strong a market for these items (and thus no potential for any price gains). I know that we should be a collector first, but it doesn't hurt if your collection increases in value as well. What do you think?

"S" mint gold coins are as collectible as any. One thing that sets San Francisco apart is that the mint is notoriously famous for their weak strikes, and gold coins are no different. With early issues, bag marks are also a problem. As these coins seen serious time used as bank to bank payments, many can be found in Unc condition. Be picky though. Full strong Uncs are are out there, but can be pricy. Don't overlook the choice sliders.

One other option when looking to gold, don't forget the fractionals and private coiners.
