Looking for input about these two morgan dollars. Do you think the
obv die is the same on both coins?

Coins are from two different mint facilities.

They are quite similar but there are distinct differences. Second set of pics - pic on the left - top of the Y, right side of the left upper arm. There is a somewhat round shape right in the corner of the serif, but the left edge of the serif is a vertical line as in a D. In the pic on the right - this shape is completely round.

In the same pics, again the Y - the Y in both is slightly doubled but it is more pronounced in the left pic. Also right hand upper branch of the Y - there is a tool mark dead center that created a raised line. It is not present in the pic on the right.

First group of pics bottom row - the R, there is a small rectangular notch in the bottom left leg of the R in the left pic - in the pic on the right this same small notch is trinagle shaped. In the pic on the right the center of the R ( round part ) has a shallow incuse line - pic on the left does not. Bottom center of the R, again the pic on the right has a finger shaped mark almost centered - pic on the left does not.

    Hi,
From these pics, I would say no.

I had to ask about these two coins. One is a 1921-D and the other is a 1921-S. The similarities between the two suggest a common master die at the least. I was looking at the correlation between "S" and "D" mint facilities. Beyond the similarities shown here, there are major differences between these two die states.

I imagine they did have a common master die. Unless I am mistaken all dies were made in Philly and shipped to the branch mints.

    Thanks for the feedback.
Had to ask about the die as the 1921-D is a VAM-1W (B-U die break), and has the pre-cud die crack E-P (obv)of the VAM-1X. Has many more die cracks, which is why I bought it.
The second example is of a 1921-S, which displays no obvious corresponding die breaks. Only the similarties shown here.

I'm not much into VAMS but at my dealers the other day he showed me 2 new Morgans he had..the one was NGC MS62 1882 S...and I'm almost sure there was another S under the last S...also there were some doubling on the letters....but for $300 I didn't want to find out....my dealer doesn't look for things like that...he said he will let his buyers find it and make them happy...I pointed this out and he said he wasn't sure but it looked like it...
Is there a 1882-S/S that anybody knows of???

I agree with GDJMSP about the master dies. I have several Morgans from different mints that share some common chips/lines/etc.

Speedy... several 1882-S S/S VAMs. Not sure if this is a complete list, but the VAM book and recent updates show VAMs 6, 17, 19, 28.
