Why not post pics of entire coins, oriented in the same position? I believe worn dies can produce coins with thicker lettering than fresh dies can.
You probably know more than I do on the subject and I don't wish to get in to a debate with you but I'm curious as to what made you say it "appears to be class 8 doubling"? (I'll never stop learning).
