very interesting looks like copper coated/annealed or just damage from exposure to high heat then got cold really fast which causes color like that. The bottom left quarter looks normal.

Up to 7 of them. When I open a roll they stick out like a sore thumb. 20200913_173738.jpg 20200913_173316.jpg

This is caused by exposure to the air . Whatever the mint used to wash the blanks for the new coins may have been the problem . Almost all of our new coins will turn brown when left out in the open if they have not been in circulation. After being used for a while they stop doing this. Maybe a mystery but someone may be able to solve it if I got it wrong.

I decided to add that the coins exposed on the ends of the coin rolls are also usually already toned from exposure.

The reeding shows red. A damaged coin wouldn't show red.

The edges on Improperly Annealed will look like a normal coin. If the reeded edges are discolored, it's environmental damage.

You are incorrect. You would be able to see the inner copper core.

One of the characteristics of an improperly annealed coin is the reeded edge does not display the same discoloration as the surface. As the coin is ejected from die chamber, the reeded collar will lightly abrade the very thin oxide layer developed during the nonconforming annealing process and the edges will look like a normal coin. If a coin suffers environmental damage after it leaves the mint, the edges will have a similar discoloration as the surfaces. Fred Weinberg shared this tip a few years ago. I’m not sure why you’re saying it’s incorrect

When you examine them in hand, if the edges look like an as struck coin, you may have something. If the "red" of the copper core is not the normal color. then it is likely environmental damage

Based on the photos, the edges are
normal, not the same color as the surfaces.

They look like genuine mis-annealed planchets
to me, from what I can see.

I am in agreement with improperly annealed determination. still finding them huh Mark? These are darker than that one from August, if you send for slabbing, send the nicest, darkest first see how that goes.

they been turning up here and there on Ebay, unslabbed of course since SRB was released, all of them Denver. there's also some of this design listed as "missing clad layer". Not sure about that unless they post the weight on it, a lot of them may also be mis-annealed.

there was one missing clad layer that looked legit, reportedly weighed 4.7g.
