Sallent's Top 20 of 2017 (With plenty of drama and suspense, and some clickbait)

Having to choose from 78 coins is not easy. There's bound to be some drama, and no matter how hard I tried, I could not narrow it down to 10, so here's my top 20.

Now, being a drama queen, you know I ain't going to spill the juicy details in one post and at one go. We got to milk this for what it's worth, and it's got to be big, bold, and flashy. So folks, I'm [not] afraid to say it's one a day from here until Christmas.

    oh the drama.gif

Let's get this party started, shall we? :cigar:

    #20

Coming in at #20, she needs no introduction. The ancient world's most competent, wise, and interesting female political figure, Julia "I didn't cry when Geta got it" Domna.

And if the lady don't impress you, check out that reverse. Hilaritas is one cool goddess and she looks wonderful on the reverse of this denarius.

    domna k (1).jpg .

So, join us tomorrow to find out which one will be #19 on the list. Will it be a dreaded Gordie roach? Or perhaps we will get to shill with our main man Julius Caesar or some cool Ptolemy inbred maniac on a power trip. Only one way to know for sure.

And as always, share your own coins. But keep your drama to yourself. There's only room enough in this thread for one grotesque over-inflated ego...mine! ;)

I want to change my name to Hilaritas. I think that would be hilarious!

Loved your post - can't wait to see No. 19.

I like both Domna and Hilaritas, and this coin you've got here is a pretty one to boot. Nice score, but I'll be waiting for the Gordies.

Very nice! Yours is from the Laodicea mint, RIC 639, RCV 6586. You can tell by the portrait style and by the ring on the side of her neck where it meets the drapery.

Here's the Rome mint version of the coin, RIC 556:

Ha, looking forward to it, and that Domna is a great way to start proceedings.

    This should be fun.

I'll have to do my own yearly recap.

@Sallent- make sure you post the Saturninus aureus, OK? Hopefully that made your Top 20, along with the Uranius Antoninus.

    That teasing is insane !
Do you mean we'll have to wait 20 days to see your #1 coin ?

It makes me think of such things...

Lovely Julia's everyone. I don't have Hilaritas, but I just got this Venus Genetrix in the mail yesterday (RIC 388c, I believe). This has to be the largest-flanned Severan denarius I have. The fierce, aging, and disappointed portrait is one of my '17 top tens:

My only Hilaritas so far is (was, I don't have it any more) of Plautilla

I don't have many provincials, but here's a Domna I just picked up. I couldn't resist the portrait:

Thessalonica, 26mm, 10.82g. Nike with wreath and palm, Varbanov 4367.

And here's a Hilaritas (AE as of Crispina):

Nice Domna. Still wish I had my exquisite Alexandrian tet of Domna but alas I sold it along with my first collection.
