Hey gang I have a proof set that's been in a Whitman holder for a few months and the coins have dust on them. Maybe I can just dust them off I don't know. If I can't, what kind of dish soap can I use to make them almost good as new? I had to wash a Franklin Half Dollar once because of a finger print. The coin turned out better than I expected but I forget the kind of dish soap I used. Anyone know something that's safe?
No such thing as safe soap. Any soap is one of the worst things you can use. I wouldn't use it with any copper coin. But MS70 does a good job with most Proofs for what you want.
I agree. You never know if there will be chlorine present that promotes bronze disease, and the other chemicals in soap are very active. I am always hesitant to use soap on old cruddy ancients, let alone modern coins with their wimpy little exteriors.
Yeah! Yeah! We know. If it doesn't look like a cesspool, smell like a cesspool and taste like a cesspool, it must be a modern. Chris
"Cesspool" is our little term of endearment. At least we don't have to put little white gloves on for fear of leaving a microscopic mark on it.
I wouldn't trust any soap either. If its just dust, maybe a dust blower for camera lenses would work?
As a rule, I use surgical latex gloves because the cotton fibers tickle the heck out of my nose. Chris
