I just spoke to my wife on the phone. She is out of town for her grandmother's funeral. They opened her safe deposit box today and to everyone's surprise it was full of coins. My brother-in-law described it as... "Mint sets and proof sets going back as far as they go. Rolls and rolls of Morgan dollars in mint condition. Steel pennies. Indian head pennies. Buffalo nickels. Wheat pennies." I didn't know my brother-in-law was a collector so I don't know how knowledgeable he is, but he knew enough to identify everything. I would have loved to have been there for that.
Sounds like a really heavy box. Try to find out more details. He may not have been a collector, just a coin hoarder and if so possibly not much value. Although the really old proof sets could be something else. Keep us informed if you find out more info.
I've already made it very clear to my wife that they need to be handled as carefully as possible and that they must not be cleaned.
Great post, Hobo ! Not everyone knows NOT to clean them. Some people think toned silver coins are like tarnished silver flatware, and commence to "polish" them. Reasonable enough for non-hobbyists. How could they know any better without being told ?
