Sacagawea Dollar with Edge Lettering Found
(Newport Beach, California) - Professional Coin Grading Service has certified the first reported Sacagawea golden dollar coin struck with the edge lettering intended only for Presidential dollars. The submitter will receive a $10,000 finder's reward from PCGS.

"The United States Mint set up specific internal procedures in an attempt to prevent this type of error from happening. But it did happen, and it's an amazing-looking error," said Ron Guth, PCGS President.

The 2007-dated coin was struck at the Denver Mint and has been examined and authenticated by the experts at PCGS. The coin was submitted by Andrew Moores of Lakewood, Colorado who found the coin in his pocket change. Moores believes he could have had the coin for as long as two weeks and only noticed it when he compared it with other Sacagawea Dollars that he had already set aside.

Moores was unaware of the reward until a coin collector friend mentioned that he had seen the offer on the PCGS Message Boards. According to Guth, who spoke with the submitter about the find, "Needless to say, Mr. Moores is a very happy man."

As much as none of the new dollar coins thrill me edge lettering on a Sacagawea is much more interesting then no edge lettering on a Presidential.

    Uh... oopsie!

I agree that a Sac with edge lettering is more interesting than a Presidential dollar without one. This also tells me that at least one 2007 Sac is-- er, was-- circulating within USA boundaries! I don't know which event is more rare... ;)

This was destined to happen. With PCGS advertising this reward early in the year, they were basically enticing a Mint employee to "accidently" create these.

2009. The bill pasted and was signed too late for it to go into effect in 2008.

I wonder if "Andrew Moores of Lakewood, Colorado who found the coin in his pocket change" knows anyone that works at the mint?

I agree, I wonder what PCGS will think of next and what their next reward will be?

Because I believe the proud, mistake free Philly mint guys  may not have heard the PCGS offer and normally produce on demand! and they would have churned out a few thousand at least to be fair so more people would have a shot at one.

They are usually are leaps and bounds ahead of Denver when it comes to producing some of the finest modern errors, mules and other borderline criminal/incompetant work behavior that goes on down at that mint :thumb:
