I was just looking at a 2001 mint set and noticed what looks like a tear running down cheek from sacagawea's right eye on the 2001 D. It looks to be approx 1/4" long. Has anyone seen or heard of this? Is it an error? Thanks, Tom
Hard to make out from the scans, but another question may help.....is the "tear" raised up like a bump, or incused like a gouge. If its raised up, then it might be a die gouge, but if its not, it could be a strike through error, or more likely a damaged coin. Also, if you have a program like Adobe Photoshop, you may be able to shrink the size of the image down without losing as much image quality.
I looked again at your pictures and based on your updated description, I'd say its a die-clash. The shape is similar (best I can tell) to the front edge of the eagles wing on the reverse. The positioning is about right. Could still be a die gouge, but I'd say is most likely a die-clash. Nice find
Thanks, I checked the reverse and there is no distortion, very nice clean detail, if that means anything. Is there any extra value to this coin? Also, this is a very nice coin and should grade out to maybe MS67+. Do you think it's worth sending to PCGS or NGC?
