SABINA AVGVSTA HADRIANI AVG PP / VENERI GENETRICI Sestertius, Rome 24,83 gr / 32 mm RIC 1035, C 74, BRMC 1883 ex Ken Dorney (thanks for the great service!)
Last year when I sold it I wasnt too hot to keep collecting. Now of course I am, and that is one coin I would have preferred to have kept! But, I know it went to a good home!
Nice portrait. I specially like the delicate way Venus holds that apple in her hands. (btw, how do they know it is an apple?)
Julius-G ... congrats on another wonderful comfy AE Sabina Sestertius (yummy) Ummm, the only example I have of this lady is this sweet AR denarius example ...
I want one with that hairstyle, too! Do you guys know when exactly the pony tail came in or out of use on Sabina's coins?
Great nekkid Sabina Sestertius @Julius Germanicus (no patina) Mine is a Denarius: RI Sabina 117-137 Denarius 3-18g Venus standing right holding an apple RSC 73
I don't know if there was a smooth transition between one of Sabina's hairstyles and another, or whether the engravers used them intermittently; but, I do agree that the 'piled-on-top' hairdo (for lack of a better description) is most appealing. I would love to add one such denarii of hers to my collection. Here is a sestertius of with Sabina with such a hairstyle. Concordia holding a patera on reverse. And a sestertius of Sabina, same type as Julius Germanicus', with Venus holding an apple in what I consider to be a very delicate and feminine pose.
With regards to hair styles, there was a very good series of articles on the subject with regards to Roman coinage years ago in The Celator. I cant remember what year, but interested parties can search through the pdf's that Wayne has so graciously made available: https://community.vcoins.com/category/the-celator/
