I just got a state quarter in my change today that was quite unusual. It's an S mint marked New York state quarter. I've searched all over the net and can't find anything. I hope someone can help me out. Thanks.
According to my 2005 Red Book, a PF-65 2001-S New York quarter is worth $5.00. Since you found it in circulation, it is almost certainly less than PF-65, in fact is almost certainly less than PF-60. I don't have a value reference for circulated proof state quarters, so I really don't know. I'd guess it's worth twenty-five cents. If it's a silver (not clad) proof coin, it's worth at least silver melt value.
If you can't tell by looking whether it is clad or silver, you can weigh it, assuming you have a scale of the necessary precision. The silver quarters weigh 6.25 grams, and the clad weigh 5.67 grams.
