I just found this in the cash register in the gas station I work at. The mint mark looks different than the other coins that i have. Can someone tell me if they see something wrong? I didn't clean this coin it was that way when I got it. The color is what caught my eye. This is the best pictures I can get as I do not have a camera and used my scanner to get these pictures.
i think the mint puched the mint marks a different way this year it does look funny tho http://www.lincolncentresource.com/San_Fransisco_Mintmark_Styles.html
I can't tell which mint mark it is from the photos, but keep in mind that aside from circulation wear, these mint marks were punched into the dies by hand and the look of them will be affected by the depth and angle of that punch as well as by the strength of the strike.
I'm seeing a normal coin. Jody's explanation makes sense...the mintmarks were hand-punched onto the dies. Therefore, they may differ in appearance when comparing 2 coins. Keep up the hunt!
I have not see this written in any book.it was a question asked at ANA function. In 1999 I think,it was asked to Q.D Bowers . Is there a punch used for each US co in1c 5c 10c and half + dollar ??? Bowers yes but each worker in the coin striking or machine should of had the right punch. He also said how could watch each coin Philly would be easy but yes I am sure there was more than one time a wrong one was used til 1990
The coin depicted looks much like all these 1945-S coins on Ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1945s-BU-wh...S_Individual&hash=item4d0b4db229#ht_126wt_675 http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk...3.TR5.TRC0&_nkw=1945-S&_sacat=11633&_from=R40 The coin depicted has an odd color. It may have been been cleaned with a harsh chemical (like Tarnex).
