So I have been hunting through rolls of pennies, got $10 in pennies today, but my plans were ruined yesterday when the teller handed me $8 of brand new 2012 Pennies. And I have noticed, it is about impossible to find any coins with an S Mint Mark. I was curious if anyone knew why this was. Thank you in advance for your help Kyle
If it had an S mint mark it would be a proof. That is only for pennies after a certain year. I dont know that year...maybe 1972?
I have never found a San Francisco proof cent in circulation, but that doesn't mean that there aren't any out there. Just gotta keep lookin...
Kyle, Do you have a Red Book? If you don't you should get one. The answer to your question can be found in the Red Book. (Even a Red Book that is several years out of date has the answer to your question.)
I find S-mint cents in every box, but not always every roll. The were minted for curculation from 1968-1974. I have one found one 1980-S proof as well. My advantage is that I am on the west coast, so S-mint coins were more heavily distrubuted here than elsewhere on the country.
