These are two of the coins my son purchased last weekend, when we went to our first coin show. The first one is an 1856 large cent, with what looks like a slanted 5.If so how common is this? The second one is a 1943 Lincoln cent, with a missing 4.Also would like to know is this common? Thanks for any help,God bless,Keith
1) The large cent is one of two varieties for the year, fancy 5 & plai 5. Not scarce. 2) The 1943 has been believed to be simply a clogged die, ie grease filled the die and that is why the didgit is missing. However, Coin World, about a couple of weeks ago says that this is now open to interpretation, and could be from some other cause. Me: Greased die. Coin World: Who knows.
The 1856 appears to be a "slanting 5" variety accordign to Redbook. Nothing diferent value wise from a regular one so value would be determined by grade but probably worth $20-$25.
