i have some canadian nickles in a bag. quite a few are 1952-53 ish, the wartime save nickle era when they were tin(i believe) plated steel. anyway, i dont know how or why, but some moisture must have gotten into the bag somehow and now i have rust stains on just about every coin in the bag ( nickle ones as well) so the questions are 1 how do you acceptably clean rust off of coins 2 is a light coating of oil acceptable on these types of coins if the answer to 2 is yes i cant help to say wd 40 as it would help in removing the rust. and would leave a film on them. only problem is i dont know what the long term effect of it would be. would it keep eating the steel. or peel the plating off eventually?
#1 - you don't. While there are several things that will remove rust none will do so in such a way that coin will be unharmed. And if it is indeed rust then the coin is already damaged, and once damaged it's damaged forever. 2 - no it isn't.
should not clean but if desperate snow bowl and cotton NOT RECOMENDED BUT WILL WORK >> THIS WILL BE DAMAGE ALL ORIGINAL FINISH DO SNOW BOWL FAST AND POLISH>> warning do not recomend DESPErate measures only IREPEAT DO NOT ATTEMPT
No, whizzing means that you take a rotating wire brush and brush the entire surface of the coin. And that's the only thing it ever means.
yuck, i dont want to kill them. just want the rust off. in that bag is my bunny nickle. i know its not worth much but it is a different coin which i like.
Once they are rusted they are already damaged. But nothing will remove that rust without causing further damage. Since thecoins are already damaged, I see nothing wrong with a light film of mineral oil to prevent firther degradation. If you want to remove it later an acetone dip and rinse would remove it. If they weren't rusted then rather a than oil I would recommend a cool dry environment.
acetone dip. thats the one i saw someone say was acceptable. but i usually leave them as i found them unless its gunk i cant see through. then i wipe it off with my t shirt. i know thats bad.
Yep, rust (Iron Oxide) is a VERY difficult problem. Anything you use will affect the surfaces negatively. However, if you're determined, I suggest soaking in a weak solution of a chelating agent like EDTA. That's about as mild as you can get, but the surfaces will still become dull.
ahh thank you. i think i will try something else. i had an idea though. how do you find rustable coins in you pocket with no rust? because all the stuff on it wore off in your pocket. on bills, pants material, other coins, and of course the magnetic stripe on your credit card. maybe the answer is carrying them around in your pocket for a week. of course there will be more damage to the coin.
, Mainly phosphoric acid, but also are some soft drinks.... yes, if you are short of naval jelly, use some Coke (tm). but not on coins.
