On Saturday we found this Russian gold coin at the Naugatuck coin show. This small Russian gold coin was selected for two reasons. #1 the price was right :smile #2 the fine details visible on the reverse :smile How do you like the detail on this double-headed imperial eagle? This coin is about the size of a US dime or $2-1/2 gold coin. Date: 1902 AP Denomination: 5 Roubles Mintage: 6,240,000 Dimension: 19 mm Material: 4.3 grams of .900 Gold Edge: moneyer’s initials “AP” and rectangular pattern
Funny I was gonna go to the Naugatuck show! I will be at the New Haven Show 3/17. Glad Connecticut is so well represented here on this forum.
The double-headed eagle was originally a Byzantine symbol, adopted by the Russian tsars. One eagle head represents the East and the other represents the West. The horseman in the middle is St. George. The orb and scepter are grasped in the eagle's claws. Above the eagle's heads is the crown. Scattered throughout the eagle’s feathers are the Coat of Arms of Astrakhen, Siberia, Georgia, Finland, Kiev-Vladimir-Novgorod, Taurica, Poland and Kazan (seen clockwise). Here is a previous CT thread describing the Russian imperial eagle and devices: http://www.cointalk.com/t52003/
My new Russian gold is only a small bullion coin but I'll bet others at CT have some nice Russian gold. Post 'em if you got 'em.
