I used some this morning to get some sticky stuff off a half dollar I wanted to save. Is rubbing alcohol bad? I've got some coins that have spots on them (looks like moisture spots). I recently bought some silver maples with spots on them. What about high proof grain alcohol? I'm thinking a dip in alcohol and then in distilled water.
I'd probably stick with pure acetone and distilled water, but it wouldn't hurt to try this method on junky coins you don't intend to keep.
If you are going to use alcohol avoid rubbing alcohol which is only 70% pure and contains various oils. 90% isopropyl is preferred, 99% if you can find it. Both will gently remove gunk without damaging the coin. And please remember, it's EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE!
