RPM or chipped die?

    Hi all,

I was examining a 1948-S dime under 30x magnification, and it appears that there's some raised chatter around the mintmark. Is this an RPM or merely the result of a chipped die? I found a PCGS CoinFacts photo of a 1948-S S/S, though it appears to be different than the mintmark pictured below.

    Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I vote for punch deterioration rather than a RPM. This type of problem shows up often on copper coins from SF also.

Thanks for the responses so far. After taking a closer look it seems that there's an S east to the central mintmark. Thoughts?
