I was looking through my dimes today and I have a 79-s and 81-s that are supposedly clear S's. The problem is, as I look at others its very hard to see any difference through the magnifing glass that I have. What power should I be using? ...and does anyone have a pair of pictures where I could clearly see what the difference is? Thanks for your help
That's perfect....now what do I need to see that? ..a 10x good enough? I'm not sure if its my eyes or the Kmart magnifing glass I'm using
lol..then I'll chaulk it up to bad eyes jhinton...thanks, I have read many time that anything more than 10x and you start to see things that do not matter. Sounds like 5X might be the right number later...
Yes and some of the time I can see the 81-S without any magnification, but I have looked at a lot of them as I'm sure you have. When you are learning what "right looks like" it sometimes helps to have some magnification.
Not necessarily your eyes. The quality of your loupe or eye piece makes a huge difference. I have two loupes that I use, one is an Eschenbach 5X and the other is an Eschenbach 12X. I use the 5X for almost everything. I would not use anything higher for grading (but some do) and you can see diagnostics of almost all the major varieties. I use the 12X when I need to authenticate a coin or to check out a spot every now and then. Both are expensive loups (at least in my book) costing $55 and $130 respectively. I have had many cheaper ones and a few that were more expensive but out of all the ones I have tried, I like these two the best.
