Anyone else seen this ad floating around the internet. I have had a couple pop-up ads recently that led me to this site:

    http://206.71.63.196/landing_pages/04reagan_0604.htm

It confused me at first, but after reading it again, it appears that they have taken a Silver Eagle Dollar and somehow added a color picture on both sides.

I'm sure it will make a nice memento for some people (much like the stamped cents mentioned in another thread recently), but I also think some people may be tricked into thinking the coin has some kind of numismatic value. Particularly with the way the U.S. Government is mentioned so often -- While the Government did actually make the coin, they have nothing to do with the subsequent changes that make it a Reagan Dollar.

I am not sure if the U.S. government minted the coin since their is pending legislation detailing how to remember Reagan...which has not been passed.

I believe this is a private enterprise.

You are right--this is not a US minted coin!!

I think it is bad that they are alowed to even put such things on ads to make non collectors think they are really getting something.

Sorry guys, disgusting as it may be, they have taken a genuine, US Mint product, and bastardized it.[IMG]
The US bullion Silver Eagle using the Walking Liberty half dollar design on the obverse and a heraldic eagle on the reverse, contains one troy ounce of fine silver, and is 40.6mm. It does indeed lurk underneath the paint.
    Amen brother.

Here's another example of the terrible things people do to genuine coins.[IMG]

Those are beautiful! I'm torn between the Pope and the Presidents Day 2001 issues. Which do you think will be a good investment? :p

It is a darn sham what these companies do to the coins. Colorizing the design of a coin is one thing, but painting an alltogether different design over an existing U.S. coin (bullion or circulating) is in effect - defacing the coin.

They do this simply so they can state that it is an actual U.S. coin as opposed to a medal. A bit of shameless marketing. Personally, I would rather see them strike their own medals and colorize them.
